Meet the National Candles

Five new scents for sad dads

Since day one we have been asked where the name Alcott came from, and there have been plenty of guesses. But there was one eagle eyed (eared?) friend who immediately knew the name Alcott was taken from The Alcott, a song by The National, featuring Taylor Swift. The truth is we always knew Taylor Swift and The National were going to be the first two collections, as we identify as Swifties and sad dads.

These two artists have been instrumental in our lives, and even before Aaron Dessner began producing Swift’s albums and they were features on one another’s songs, we knew they had many things in common: a way with words and sensory imagery, a robust discography, and the ability to make us cry.

And now we’re so excited to bring these five new scents based on songs from some of The National’s most popular albums, and our favorites, to you. Whether you’re a fan of The National, a sad dad (literally or spiritually), or just a fan of clean burning candles we think you’re going to love The National candles.

Apartment story

Notes of: Rose, Embers, Lavender
Season profile: Winter
The candle for you if: Your idea of romance is being snowed in.

This is our most feminine and romantic scent yet. Rose and lavender are balanced by the smokiness of a fire that’s burned down to embers in the early hours. This candle will invoke the feeling of snowfall in the dead of winter and being warmed by a tender touch that will keep you in a rosy-minded fuzz for days.

BLOODBUZZ OHIO

Notes of: Violet, Saffron, Tomato Leaf
Season profile: Spring
The candle for you if: You have an accent that only comes out when you’re drinking.

This candle smells like a spring garden with notes of tomato, the state fruit of Ohio, and violets, a nod to the album’s floral namesake. Saffron rounds out this scent, and grounds it so you don’t risk being carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees.

Quiet light

Notes of: Alpine Air, Fog, Gin
Season profile: Fall
The candle for you if: Dawn is your favorite time of the day.

I am Easy to Find is intrinsically linked to Switzerland for us as we were visiting friends in Zurich when the album came out. This candle captures the smells of an early morning in the city, aimlessly wandering around 400 year old churches with a cup of something to keep you warm as you watch the sky go from black to grey.

This is the last time

Notes of: Petrichor, Moss, Forest Floor
Season profile: Spring
The candle for you if: A situationship has ever emotionally destroyed you.

Those who know Carsen have long known her favorite smell is dirt, so we were not going to pass up the opportunity to make a swamp inspired candle. This ended up being earthy, watery, and even a little bit airy resulting in a candle that leaves you feeling sad and high.

Tropic morning news

Notes of: Sea Salt, Lemongrass, Lime
Season profile: Summer
The candle for you if: Your vice is doom scrolling.

For those who have been asking for an oceanic scent, this one is for you. The song that inspired this scent is a balancing act. We just swapped balancing the slush in the sentiment for balancing the smells of light, tropical fruit with the moodiness of a churning sea.
