Why Fragrance Matters to Good Soy Candles

Yes, we know scent is the most important part of a candle. But a good soy candle will go beyond scent and drill down into what the fragrance oil is made of. Because we all want our candles to smell good and be good for us.

Scent first, safety second

Many candles on the market use several products that could be affecting your health. One of the main culprits is the way candles are scented. Traditionally, fragrance oils used for scented candles contain chemicals that are known carcinogens and cannot be disposed of safely without specialty equipment. These candles can smell great but at the cost of your own well-being.

Scent and safety equal

When we say smell good, we also mean good for you. We only use fragrance oils that are free of:

  • Acute toxins: toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single spill

  • Organ toxins: toxins that can affect specific bodily organs

  • Reproductive toxins: materials that can affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects

  • Carcinogens: materials known to cause cancer

  • Mutagens: materials that change the DNA of a cell

  • Phthalates: widely used chemicals detrimental to human health

  • Ingredients found on California’s Proposition 65 list

Wax flakes tgat are often used to make good soy candles.

Wax also matters FOR good soy candles

Of course, we couldn’t talk about good soy candles without mentioning soy wax. Soy is a renewable, natural resource, and we use 100% soy wax in our candles. Other natural waxes for candles include beeswax, coconut, and apricot wax.

If you have a candle that does not use natural wax, it’s probably made of paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is made from petroleum, a by-product of making gasoline. While no study has found evidence that paraffin wax will cause damage, we think we’ll leave testing that theory to the researchers. Plus, who wants to use a candle made from a nonrenewable resource?

All of this means you can safely handle our candles, so you can reuse your candle container without worrying about how it could affect you or the planet. We spend months testing fragrances to ensure that they meet the above criteria and smell as good better than the other candles out there — without cancer-causing chemicals.
